The outdoor compressor unit of a ductless mini-split heat pump is the part of the system that moves heat, not air, between the indoors and outdoors. The outdoor unit compresses and moves refrigerant in a closed loop system, uses a coil and fan to exchange heat with the outdoors, and works in either direction depending on whether you want heating or cooling. 

The indoor unit is the part of the system mounted on your wall, ceiling, or floor. Its job is to transfer heat between the refrigerant and the air inside your room. It does this quietly and efficiently. It pulls air from inside your room, either warms it or cools it by passing it over a refrigerant-filled coil then blows it back into the room.
